SPENCER Was born in St. Charles county, Missouri, November 15, 1821, and there resided on a farm until 1852, when he removed to Jackson county where he remained until 1854. On March twenty-fifth of that year, accompanied by his wife and three children, he started to cross the plains to far-away Oregon, where he arrived in the month of October, and coming direct to Lane county, first located on Camp creek, on a donation claim. After a residence there of four years he purchased his present property from Howard Maupin, consisting of three hundred and twenty acres and situated seven miles north of Eugene City and a mile and a half to the northeast of Irving, where he is engaged in general farming and leading an industrious and useful life. Mr. Spencer has been twice married. In the first instance, in Missouri, October 4, 1843, to Miss Mary E. Quaid, a native of Berkeley county, Virginia. This lady died March 6, 1846. He espoused secondly, February 4, 1847, Miss Mahala Smith, a native of St. Charles county, Missouri, and has a family surviving of five children, viz: Mary E., Eliza L., Jennie L., Jefferson D., and Septimus S.
