Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 1212. SMITH & STEINER Proprietors of the Red Corner Drug Store, of Salem, are the leading druggists of the place, and are highly respected in commercial circles throughout the coast. They purchased the business in July, 1890, and since that time have met with gratifying success. By the employment of strictly honorable methods they have won the confidence of the community; their intelligence and care in filling prescriptions has secured the patronage of the prominent physicians and the approval and good-will of the public. J. C. Smith, the senior member of the firm, came to Oregon in 1874. He was born in Washington county, Iowa, August 12, 1859. His grandfather, Isaac Smith, was a pioneer of Kentucky, and his father, I. N. Smith, was born in that State. The latter married Miss Nancy Young, of Kentucky, and to them were born seven children, the Doctor being the youngest. He was educated at the Iowa State University, and was graduated from the medical department of this institution, March 6, 1889. After this event he removed to the Pacific coast, and located in Salem, where he embarked in his present business in 1890. He is Senior Warden of Pacific Lodge, No. 50, F. & A. M., and also belongs to the chapter. Politically, he is a radical Republican. He was married July 19, 1889, to Miss Emma Thomas, a native of Oregon. The Doctor is a man of exceptional ability, and has attained an enviable rank in business circles in Salem. Lee Steiner, the junior member of the firm of Smith & Steiner, was born at Lima, Ohio, September 26, 1870. He is of German extraction, but his ancestors have lived in America for three generations. G. Steiner, his father, was a native of Ohio, and he married Miss Elizabeth Hass, who was also born in the Buckeye State. They had a family of four children, our subject being the second in order of birth. He was reared at Bluffton, Iowa, and since he was a lad of eleven years he has made a study of pharmacy. He is thoroughly informed upon this subject, and is one of the most reliable druggists in the State. He has been an active member of the firm of Smith & Steiner since the partnership was formed. Politically, he is independent. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and takes a laudable pride in his connection with the National Guard of the State; he has had the honor of being Hospital Steward of the Ninth Regiment. He is obliging and courteous in manner, and has won a host of friends, both in and out of business life. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in November 2005 by Diana Smith.
