Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 222. S. PAUL JONES Among the energetic and enterprising farmers of Marion county stands S. Paul Jones, who is a member of one of the old and respected families of the Willamette valley, where he has spent his life, devoting his efforts to agriculture pursuits. Mr. Jones was born on his father's farm, about four miles southeast of Gervais, in 1888, and is a son of S. W. and Sarah (Darland) Jones. His father who died here in 1921, came to this state in boyhood, accompanying his father S. W. R. Jones, on his migration from Indiana in 1852. They made the journey by ox team and on his arrival here the grandfather located on what was known as the Daugherty donation claim, which S. Paul Jones now owns. Here he was engaged extensively in sheep raising and farming. S. W. Jones, the father, received his education in the district school near hi: home and after he began farming on his own account he devoted his efforts mainly to wheat and cattle. The mother, who now lives in Salem, came across the plains with her parents in 1853, the family living in Oregon and Washington. Mr. Jones took an active part in the development of his community, doing much donation road work and serving as a member of the school board. To him and his wife were born the following children: Mrs. Bertha Hoover, deceased; Jennie, who became the wife of W. P. Collard and lives in this neighborhood; Mrs. Althea Naftzger, who lives near Gervais; Mrs. Sylvia Brixey, who also resides near Gervais; Edna, the wife of W. H. Ramp, of Brooks; S. Paul, of this sketch; and Rita, who is the wife of Ralph Harper and lives near Gervais. Two brothers and two sisters of S. W. Jones are still living in this section of the valley, namely M. L. Jones, whose home is south of Brooks; Scott Jones, who lives near Gervais Mrs. Emma Simmons, of Woodburn; and Mrs. Sarah Clark, of Portland. S. Paul Jones received his education in the Jones school, district No. 13, in Willamette University and in the Capital Business College, though he did not graduate from either of these institutions. He remained on his father's farm until after his marriage, in 1916, when he moved to the old Jones homestead on the Daugherty claim, where he lived until 1923, when he came to his present farm which was a part of his father's estate, and where he is now operating four hundred and ten acres of land. He carries on general farming, has much of the land in pasture, and has a large and thriving peach orchard, besides which he pastures a large number of sheep from the Daugherty place, the flock now numbering about three hundred and fifty head. Mr. Jones is energetic and methodical in his work, has a well improved ranch and has met with a measure of success that stamps him as a good business man, numbered among the solid and substantial agriculturists of his section of the valley. In 1916 Mr. Jones was united in marriage to Miss Blanche Evans, who was born in Missouri and is a daughter of A. E. and Catherine (Trout) Evans, who came to the Willamette valley about 1907. Her father died here in 1921 and her mother is now living at Mills City. To Mr. and Mrs. Jones have been born three children, S. Paul, Jr., aged ten years; Aminta, aged nine: and Evans William, a lad of six years. Mr. Jones has given a due share of his interest to the public affairs of his community and is now chairman of the Mission Bottom school board. He is a gentleman of sterling character and fine social qualities and has always been a popular man among his neighbors and acquaintances. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
