Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 538. SIDNEY R. ALLEN A list of the substantial and respected business men and enterprising citizens of Eugene must include the name of Sidney R. Allen, who has been engaged in the drug business here continuously since 1911 and has realized a fine measure of success. He was born in Rockland, Maine, on the 29th of September, 1884, and is a son of F. Y. and Eva L. (Thornedyke) Allen, the former a native of Jackson county, Oregon. The paternal grandfather of Sidney R. Allen came to this state in a very early day. F. Y. Allen, who is now deceased, followed farming pursuits for many years and also engaged in mining. His widow, who makes her home with a son, was a daughter of J. H. Thornedyke, who crossed the plains in the '50s and lived in California and Oregon. In the acquirement of an education Sidney R. Allen attended the public schools of California and Oregon and subsequently entered the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was graduated in 1906. He then clerked in various stores in Oregon and in 1908 came to Eugene, where he was employed in drug stores until 1911, when he entered into a partnership with George Yarrington and opened a drug store at 86 Ninth avenue, East. This proved a successful enterprise, and after Mr. Yarrington's death his interest in the business was purchased by Mr. Allen, who has since conducted the establishment alone. He has a well arranged and finely equipped store, in which he carries a full line of pure drugs and a large and well selected stock of such goods as are usually found in an up-to-date drug emporium. Mr. Allen has given close and careful attention to the wants of his customers, whom he treats with uniform courtesy, and he is enjoying his full share of the local trade in his line. On May 31, 1910, Mr. Allen was united in marriage to Miss Edna Tostevin of Ashland, Oregon. He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Woodmen of the World, and also belongs to the Eugene Country Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He supports the republican party and has always maintained a consistent interest in public affairs. He has shown a fine spirit of cooperation in matters affecting the welfare and prosperity of Eugene and gives liberal support to all worthy causes. Courteous and accommodating in business, friendly and agreeable in his relations with his fellowmen, and a man of invulnerable integrity in all the relations of life, he has well deserved the respect which is accorded him throughout his community. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
