Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 71. SHERMAN W. MOODY Nothing is of more importance to a person's physical welfare than the proper care of the eyes and those who devote their lives to this line of work are as valuable to society as any other profession could possibly be. The city of Eugene is fortunate in having in Sherman W. Moody a man well qualified by training and experience to handle this line of work according to the most scientific methods, and his record since coming to Eugene has been such as has gained for him an enviable standing among the successful professional men of this locality. Mr. Moody was born in Rutland, Vermont, on the 14th of December, 1868, and is a son of Francis and Mary E. (Young) Moody, both of whom are deceased. In early life his father was a sailor but later turned his attention to mercantile pursuits. Sherman W. Moody had a public and high school education in Springfield, Massachusetts, after which he devoted two years to the study of medicine. He then entered the South Bend College of Optometry, where he was graduated in the early '90s. He also learned the jewelry and optical business and soon afterwards located in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he built up the leading business in his line in that city, remaining there sixteen years. In 1903 he went to Grand Junction, Colorado, where he remained until 1911, when he moved to Portland, Oregon. In 1916 he came to Eugene and bought out the business of Fred E. Burgess. He was successful from the start and his patronage has steadily increased through the years until today he commands the major portion of the optometry business of this locality, his patients coming from a wide radius of surrounding country. He is well equipped to give prompt and efficient service, having his own grinding department, and his work has given uniform satisfaction. Mr. Moody was united in marriage to Mrs. Mary Budeigh, of Oregon City, Oregon, formerly of Randolph, New York, and they are the parents of a daughter, Roberta Jean, now twelve years of age. By a former marriage, Mrs. Moody is the mother of two children. Miles Burleigh, the noted radio singer, and Robert, at home. In Masonry, Mr. Moody has taken the degrees of both the York and Scottish rites and is identified with the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias. He also belongs to the Kiwanis Club, the Eugene Country Club and the Chamber of Commerce. His political allegiance is given to the republican party, while his religious connection is with the Presbyterian church. Among his fellowmen he is regarded as a valuable citizen, being devoted to the best interests of his community, and his excellent personal qualities have gained for him the sincere esteem of all who know him. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
