Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 950. HON. THOMAS H. CRAWFORD one of Union county's leading attorneys, was born in Washington county, Arkansas, March, 1848, and was the oldest in a family of eight children born to George A. and Martha J. (Wilson) Crawford, natives of Tennessee, who emigrated to Oregon in 1870, settled in Clackamas county, and there died soon after coming to the State. Thomas received a common school education in the public schools of Arkansas, but he was not satisfied with this and so entered the State Agricultural College at Corvallis, from which he graduated in 1874. He then chose the profession of law for his calling. Although he possessed no means to carry on his studies, he was ambitious, and therefore taught school to obtain the sufficient funds. He read law with Judge Kelsey, of Corvallis, and was admitted to the bar in 1876. After completing his law studies he went to Dayton, Washington, at which place he was made Probate Judge. After serving his term he moved to Baker City and remained one year, and then moved to Union, where he has since remained, engaged in the pursuit of his profession. He has a very large practice throughout the district. He was nominated on the Democratic ticket for Prosecuting Attorney, but was defeated by a small majority on the part of his Republican adversary, although his majority in his home town was large. The Judge was married in 1878 to Miss Rosezelia A. Smith, a native of Ohio, who came to Oregon with her parents when she was a small child. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford have had two children, the oldest, Clarence H., born in 1879; and Maud, who died when only three years of age. The one child left Mr. and Mrs. Crawford is the pride and joy of their lives. Judge Crawford is very prominent in Democratic politics; is a Mason of good standing, and holds the office of Grand Deputy Chancellor, of his district, in the order of K. of P. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
