"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 602. Malheur County. THOMAS J. GOODYEAR The prominent citizen, intelligent gentleman and well-to-do stockman of Malheur county having headquarters at the home ranch of one-half section, ten miles northwest from Jordan Valley post office. He is a man of energy and industry, who has made his entire holding by his wise management and careful industry since coming to this country. Thomas J. was born in Warwickshire, England, on March 8, 1864, being the son of William and Sarah (Burdette) Goodyear. He was well educated in his native country, being a graduate from the high school. In 1879 he came to the United States, landing in New York, whence he came direct to Silver City, Idaho, traveling by train as far as Winnemucca and thence by stage the balance of the distance. He soon was on the range and has continued to ride more or less since that time. In 1880 he came to Jordan Valley, and the following year he started the stock business for himself, and in 1886 he located his present place on Cow creek, described above. His ranch is well improved and produces abundantly from the meadows, while he has a large bunch of cattle. In 1887 Mr. Goodyear took a trip to England to visit his people. His father is now dead, but the mother still lives. Two years subsequent to this trip Mr. Goodyear came to the happy period of his life when he took to himself a wife, the lady being Miss Mary E. B. Jackson, formerly of his native country. The nuptials occurred on December 27, 1889, and since that time Mrs. Goodyear has presided over their pleasant home with grace and dignity, being a woman of many virtues. Mr. Goodyear is a member of the I.O.O.F., Jordan Valley Lodge, and also of the Modern Woodmen, Camp No. 5486, being venerable consul of this last order. Mr. Goodyear has always been active in politics, allying himself with the Democratic party, and he has achieved a good prestige throughout the county, having demonstrated his capabilities and worth. Mr. Goodyear, as mentioned above, came here with little capital and has through his faithful labors gained his present competence. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
