Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 146. WALTER E. KEYES Walter E. Keyes, attorney at law, is engaged in general practice at Salem and stands high in his profession, while he has also figured prominently in civic affairs. He was born January 16, 1881, in Mitchell, Wheeler county, Oregon, and is a son of Z. T. and A. V. (Booth) Keyes. The mother was born in this state and her father, the Rev. R. A. Booth, was one of Oregon's pioneer ministers, who devoted his talents to the service of the Methodist church and was a sincere follower of the faith he preached. Z. T. Keyes was born in Tennessee and for many years engaged in stock raising in eastern Oregon. He is now living retired in Salem but the mother is deceased. Walter E. Keyes attended the public schools of Salem and began his law studies in this city. He completed his education in George Washington University, from which he received the degree of LL. B. in 1906, and after his admission to the bar opened an office in Salem. He has continuously followed his profession in this city for twenty-one years, displaying keen sagacity in the solution of intricate legal problems, and his clientele has steadily increased. He is a wise counselor as well as an able advocate and wins a large percentage of his cases, never entering the courtroom without preparation as thorough as time and opportunity render possible. In September, 1916, Mr. Keyes was united in marriage to Miss Ida Hise of Salem, and both are prominent in the social life of the city. Mr. Keyes gives his political allegiance to the republican party and during 1917-18 was mayor of Salem. He took a determined stand for the rigid enforcement of law and order and gave to the municipality an administration that was thoroughly satisfactory. Along fraternal lines he is identified with the Masons, the United Artisans and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He is a member of the Marion County and Oregon State Bar Associations and his deep interest in Salem's growth and progress is indicated by his affiliation with the Chamber of Commerce. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
