Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 347. WILLIAM HOLLISTON Agriculture and horticulture have long been the basis of the prosperity of the Willamette Valley and among those who are devoting their time and attention to these lines of business William Holliston, of Creswell, Lane county, is deserving of specific mention in the annals of his locality, for he has shown such qualities of character and judgment in his business affairs as stamp him as a man of genuine worth. Mr. Holliston was born in Oronoco, Minnesota, April 20, 1861, and is a son of James and Mary (Stephenson) Holliston, both of whom died in Hutchinson, Minnesota, where the father was engaged in farming. Having secured his education in the public schools of his native state, William Holliston remained at home with his parents until twenty-one years of age. In 1887 he went to Tacoma, Washington, and engaged in the livery business, keeping fifty head of horses. He conducted that business until 1894, when he sold out and, returning to Minnesota, bought two hundred acres of land, on which he successfully engaged in farming until 1899, when he rented the place and moved to Hutchinson, where he became interested in the real estate business, to which he devoted his attention until 1913, when he came to Creswell as secretary for the Creswell Orchard Company, the most successful orchard company in Lane county. He has most capably directed this enterprise and he is also the owner of three well improved and productive farms in the vicinity of Creswell, on which he has pure bred cattle and sheep. In 1913 Mr. Holliston was united in marriage to Miss Anna Kjemhus, daughter of Knute and Lena (Stevens) Kjemhus. Her father was born and reared in Norway, from which country he came to the United States at the age of nineteen years. He enlisted for service in the Union Army during the Civil war and was wounded in battle. Soon after the close of the war, he went to Minnesota and took up a homestead, which he developed into a good farm, living there to the time of his death, when eighty-five years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Holliston had one daughter, Eva Dorothy, who was born July 1, 1914, and died on the 12th of the same month. Mr. Holliston was a member of Equity Lodge, No. 221, A. F. & A. M., and Hassan Valley Lodge, No. 109, I.O.O.F., both of Minnesota. In his political alignment he is a democrat. During his residence in Lane county he has shown a commendable disposition to cooperate in every possible way with his fellow citizens in the advancement of the community's best interests and fairness has characterized all his business dealings. He has been a worthy example in all that constitutes good citizenship and is well deserving of the respect in which he is held. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
