Hans Bergman Was born in Tannas, Harjedalen, Sweden, November 25, 1868. His parents were Olof Bergman and Brita Ingrbrikts. The former held, during his lifetime, many offices and positions of trust in the community where he lived. The subject of this sketch joined the Good Templars at an early age, and until leaving Sweden took an active part in temperance work. He emigrated to America in April, 1893, arriving at his destination in Goodhue county, Minnesota, in the middle of May. For three summers he worked on farms, but devoting part of the winters to study, and for some time attending the Swedish-American institution of learning, Hope Academy, in Moorhead, Minn., or until that institution was forced to close its doors owing to the panic and financial depression prevailing throughout the whole country in the 90ís. Moving across the Red River to Fargo N.D., he was engaged in business there for some time. In February, 1898, he went to Montana, living in Bonner and Butte for the next years. In June, 1907, he came to Spokane, Wash., and there began the publishing of Svenska Nordvastern, with which he continued until June, 1912, when he went to Sweden to visit his old birthplace. Returning to America again in spring of 1913 he, in the fall of that year, took up newspaper work again, carrying on such work until 1920. In the summer of that year he served his connection with the Svenska Nordvastern and with his family moved to Victoria, B.C., to become secretary to the Swedish Consulate there, in which capacity he served until that consulate office as abolished in the spring of 1924. While in Victoria he published a book about British Columbia and its Swedish pioneers. At present he is, with his family, living in Tacoma and had devoted some months to the editing and publishing of this volume. He was married in Spokane October 6, 1914, to Selma Neslund, born in Hoffman, Minnesota, April 6, 1885.
