"An Illustrated History of Whitman County, state of Washington." San Francisco: W. H. Lever, 1901. p. 355. HENRY HICKMAN Near the town of Almota is the center of a number of mammoth farms, not the least important among which is the fourteen-hundred-and-twenty-acre tract of the man whose name gives caption to this article. The wayfarer, noticing the beautiful home of the owner and observing the excellent barn, well selected orchard and many other improvements, as well as the numerous conveniences which add their charm to the place, and the air of thrift everywhere pervading its atmosphere, is led to inquire something of the antecedents and personal history of its presiding genius. Inquiry brings to light the fact that Mr. Hickman is a native of Illinois, born September 13, 1852, that he passed his youth there, receiving such education as the public schools there established afforded, and afterwards turning his attention to the basic art of agriculture. In 1877 he came to Whitman county and located on a tract about four miles northwest of Almota, which forms the nucleus of his present princely domain. His earnings, over and above what was required for the immediate necessities of himself and family, were applied to the purchase of more land, prosperity attended him and his flocks and herds increased, in due time making him one of the wealthy and substantial citizens of the county. While Mr. Hickman has always manifested the interest that every good citizen should in the affairs of the county, state and nation, he does not seem to have ever been ambitious for personal preferment and never has been a candidate for any office. His standing in the community is, however, a very enviable one, and he is secure in the esteem of those who know him best. Mr. Hickman was married in Illinois on August 18, 1874, the lady being Miss Mary Davis, a native of that state. They now have six children: Charles, Edward, Maud, Annie, James and William. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in June 2009 by Diana Smith.
