Bergman, Hans. "History of Scandinavians in Tacoma and Pierce County with brief history of Tacoma and early settlement." Tacoma, WA, 1926. pp. 97-98. John Berglund Was born in Harlunda, Smaland, Sweden, September 25, 1865. When he was six years old, his parents moved to Almunsryd, Smaland, at which place he spent his youth as a shepherd during the summer as attented school in the winter time. During the teen afe he worked for the farmers in Skane; and at the age of 21 and 22 years he went through the regulation military training at the Ljungby training field in Skane. Then he went to northern Sweden, where he for a number of years was engaged in railroad construction work on the Swedish State Railways. He emigrated to America in May 1892, coming direct to Ironwood, Mich., where he worked in the iron mines for about five years. In 1897 he went to Rossland, British Columbia, the famous gold mining town in Canada where he followed mining and logging work for about four years. He returned to the States again in February, 1901, and bought a ten acre tract at Edgewood, a few miles outside of the city limits of Tacoma, and began improving it. Due to lack of capital and the general depression throughout the country, he had quite a struggle, but as time went on, things seemed to get brighter and brighter. In July of 1901 he was married in Tacoma to Christine Peterson, who was born in Grasmark, Sweden, April 10, 1870. To this union was born a son, Herman Theodore, who now holds a position with the bank of California, N. A., in Tacoma. Mrs Berglund died in July, 1914. With his family Mr. Berglund lived on his forst Edgewood farm for fourteen years. In connection with his farming he sold produce for the farmers living in that community. During his stay in Edgewood he owned several other tracts of land, which he disposed of and moved to Tacoma in 1920. At the present time he is retired from active business. Together with his son, Mr. Berglund owns and occupies an attractive home at 719 South 59th Street, Tacoma. Father and son are both active and respected members of the Swedish Tabernacle church of Tacoma. They are held in high esteem by all who have been associated with them; and their lives have at all times been guided by high moral and religious standard. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Bios.
