"Seattle and Environs, 1852-1924." Vol. 3. Hon. C. H. Hanford, Editor. Pioneer Historical Pub. Co., 1924. p. 506. JOHN BERNARD SUESS John B. Suess, who has been actively identified with industrial interests of Seattle as a glass manufacturer for more than two decades, is the founder and president of the Suess Glass Company, which was incorporated in March, 1916, and has a. well equipped factory at Eighth avenue and Virginia street. His birth occurred in Europe, on the 9th of November, 1875, his parents being John B. and Mary Suess, who on emigrating to the United States took up their abode in Illinois, where the father engaged in cabinetmaking. Subsequently they journeyed westward to Washington, establishing their home in Seattle, where they still reside and have gained an extensive and favorable acquaintance. The father is now living retired, enjoying in well earned rest the fruits of his former toil. John B. Suess obtained his education in the public schools of Chicago, Illinois, and after putting aside his textbooks learned glass manufacturing in that .city, acquainting himself with the general glass business as well as the manufacture of art glass for memorial windows. The year 1901 witnessed his arrival in Seattle and here he embarked in business in a small way at the corner of Western avenue and Wall street. The steady growth of the industry necessitated larger quarters and in 1911 a removal was made to Virginia and Westlake streets, while in 1920 a sash and door department was added. The business increased to such an extent that in 1923 the sash and door factory was removed to Ballard, where employment is now furnished to seventy-five experienced workmen. The Suess Glass Company, of which Mr. Suess is president, was incorporated in March, 1916, and has enjoyed a steady growth, owing to the wise and careful control of its chief executive officer, who in the conduct of his affairs has manifested splendid business ability, keen discrimination and unfaltering energy. On the 15th of April, 1897, in Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Suess was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Stumph, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Stumph. Mr. and Mrs. Suess have a son and a daughter: Mrs. Edna Webb, who was educated in the Seattle schools, is now residing in Chicago, and has a daughter, Evelyn, who is in San Francisco; and John Walter Suess, a native of Seattle, who obtained his education in the public schools of this city and is also a graduate of the University of Washington. He is now associated in business with his father. Mr. John B. Suess is a worthy exemplar of the teachings and purposes of the Masonic fraternity, to which he belongs, and is also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association. The prosperity which he now enjoys and which places him among the representative manufacturers of Seattle is attributable entirely to his own well directed efforts and unabating industry. His residence is at No. 1708 Third avenue North. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in July 2016 by Diana Smith.
