"An Illustrated History of Whitman County, state of Washington." San Francisco: W. H. Lever, 1901. p. 408. JOHN F. KELLEY a large real-estate holder and extensive farmer of Whitman county, of which he is also an esteemed and respected citizen, came, in 1870, from New York state to California and remained in that state and at the Sound two years. He then came to Whitman county, arriving in 1872. His purpose in coming here was that he might engage in the stock business, so he acquired as much land as he could by the use of his homestead, pre-emption and timber culture rights and by purchasing from the railroad. His realty holdings now aggregate about two thousand acres, most of this land being under cultivation. At the present time he gives the major portion of his attention to wheat-raising, though he still handles some cattle and other live stock. Of course, Mr. Kelley does not attempt to handle his mammoth domain himself, but rents much of it to other parties. On his home place are many valuable improvements, among them a small orchard. Notwithstanding the amount of property our subject has the supervision of and the exacting nature of his private affairs, he has always found time to take an active and public-spirited interest in local affairs and in politics, zealously supporting the tenets of the Republican party, and assisting vigorously in the campaigns of that organization. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in July 2009 by Diana Smith.
