"The Oregonian's Handbook of the Pacific Northwest." Portland, OR: Oregonian Publishing Co., 1894. pg. 443. THOMAS C. GRIFFITTS Of the successful lawyers and brilliant orators of Washington, no one is better known than Thomas C. Griffitts. Born in Carthage, Illinois, December 5, 1857, he grew up in the sterling society of that part of Illinois which Lincoln and Douglass were, in the early part of his life, making their battle-ground. As a member of the constitutional convention of Washington, as vice-president of the National Association of Democratic Clubs for the state and as Washington's first democratic candidate for Congress, Mr. Griffitts became widely known. In order that he might more assiduously prosecute his profession, he retired from politics. Although not a criminal lawyer, he possesses the remarkable record of having defended and secured the acquittal of 22 men accused of murder in the first degree. He is now engaged in attending to his large practice. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Bios. Project in May 2005 by Diana Smith.
