July 17, 2000 Marion "AL" Allen Carter, 76, of Longview, died July 15, 2000 in Seattle. He was born Feb. 29, 1924 in Castle Rock to William Benjamin and Elizabeth Euceba (Hiles) Carter, and graduated from Castle Rock High School. He served in World War 2 as a gunner's mate, a frogman, seaman, fireman, and captain's cook from 1943 to 1945. Mr. Carter lived in Longview for 55 years and worked for the Weyerhaeuser Company as a saw filer for 26 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the American Legion, veterans of foreign wars, and the National Rifle Association. He loved to fish, draw, oil paint, collect coins, and make knives out of saw blades. He wasn't much of a church goer but was a religious man devoted to his family. He had many friends and was willing to share his knowledge and talents with them. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 55 years, Beatrice Carter, in May 1999. He is survived by a son, Gilbert Allen Carter of Kelso; two daughters, Paulette P. Haas of Vancouver and Tracey Dunlap of Everett, WA; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 pm Thursday at Steel Chapel the Rev. Jim Conrod will officiate. Inurnment will be at Longview Memorial Park.
