Howard wife of D. F. Howard of Stella, Wash., died at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, July 3, 1922. The funeral ceremonies were held in the Grange Hall at Stella and the remains were laid to rest in the Weist cemetery near that place July 5th. Mr. and Mrs. Howard came to this county in the year 1875 and settled near Stella, where they have lived almost continuously to the present time. While health and prosperity lasted they were noted for their hospitality and their doors were always open to friend and neighbors, who often met there in the social gatherings and the community was happier and better for their having lived in it. Many of their old neighbors have passed on, but there were many who came to witness the last rites, bringing their floral tokens of love and esteem for their departed friend. S. Tryon of Mayger, an old friend of the family, officiated at the ceremonies, delivering a short but impressive address, dwelling especially on the faith of the deceased, which was spiritualism. There were several friends from Kelso present, among whom were Mrs. Hattie Olson, Mrs. Charles Hansickie and Mrs. Maggie Barlow, who assisted in the singing of several beautiful and appropriate songs. Mrs. Clara Catlin of Kelso was also present. The deceased was born in to Jo Davis County, Illinois, January 15, 1845, and was married to D. F. Howard in Covington, Nebraska, December 25, 1868. They migrated to Portland in 1874. Deceased leaves a husband, D. F. Howard, four sons, E. C., Bert R., Arthur, Walter D., all of this county; three daughters, Mrs. Gertie Young of Portland, Mrs. Hazell Taison of San Fransisco, Mrs. Helen Lockman of Arlington, Wash.; one sister, Mrs. Annie Bently of Portland; one brother, Soloman De Borde of Montana, to mourn her loss.
