OBITUARY: JESSE L. JACOBS Submitted by: Jenny Tenlen Source: "The Daily News" (Longview, WA), 25 Jul 2006 Jesse L. Jacobs Jr., known to all as "Jess", died Wednesday July 19, 2006 at a local nursing home after a brief illness. He was 91. Jess was born on November 15, 1914 in the little town of Freeport on the Cowlitz River before the village was swallowed up by the new city of Longview. In 1937 he married Elizabeth "Liz" Robinson of Oak Point, they had three Sons. She preceded him in death. During his last years, Jess made a full page list of all the occupations he'd had. They ranged from logger, purse seiner on the Columbia River, tugboat worker, country musician, mule skinner for the U. S. Forest Service pack trains, longshoreman, fish buyer and mill worker. During the Depression, he punched cattle throughout the North and Southwest with his life long friend Harold Cornwell. Jess retired over 25 years ago as custodian and bus driver at Carrolls School. He was known for his skill as a knife maker and wood carver and was a lifelong nature and animal lover and conservationist, while he and his family lived in a tent house on Mt. Pleasant, he built a home on the site of a former log dump. With the help of his family, he carted in decaying leaves and built up the barren soil into a beautifully landscaped yard, orchard and kitchen garden complete with totem poles and other statuary he had carved. Jess spent his last years caring for the emerging forest on his logged over land and maintaining trails he had built. He is survived by three sons and there wives, Zane & Charlotte Jacobs, Gary & Gloria Jacobs, Darrel Jacobs; 4 brothers; 4 sisters; numerous grand children and great grand children. H is also his female shepherd, Fat Dog. At his request there will be no service. Arrangements are by Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home.
