Charles Ray Harrison, 73, of Kelso, died Aug. 26, 2003, at home. He was born Jan. 15, 1930, in Kelso, to Ray and Ruth (Wade) Harrison. His father later married Margye Wines and he grew up in the Kelso area with five brothers and 4 sisters. Mr. Harrison began working for Longview Fiber Co., at the age of 16, during World War II's male work force shortage. He worked for the company for 46 years, mostly as a pipefitter, but spent five years in the box plant. He enjoyed his work and loved his side business of cutting firewood and doing excavation work. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and a 17-year member of Kelso's North Gate City church. Mr Harrison was active in the church's Sunday school, bus ministry and campground in Clatskanie. He will be remembered for his inspiration and encouragement. He enjoyed his fruit trees, gardening, hunting, fishing, cards, water skiing, bowling, roller-skating, barbecues and dining out with friends and family. He married Betty Davids and they had seven children before divorcing in 1972. In July 1974, he married Janet Hutton, who had five children. Survivors include his wife, at home; his stepmother, Margye Harrison of Kelso; three sisters, Charlotte Coulter, Reva Stephenson and Alina Kleppen, all of Kelso; three brothers, Larry Farnsworth of Westport, Wash., Jerry Farnsworth of Sweet Home, Ore., and Ray Harrison of Kelso; seven sons, Randy, Terry and Charles Ray Harrison, Jr., all of Kelso, Michael "Shane" and Jeffery Hutton, both of Kelso and Derek Hutton of Mt. Vernon, Ore.; four daughters, Kathy Stratton of Longview, Twila Barbieri of Battle Ground, Wash., Cindy Anderson of Kelso and Sheri Shepard of Chehalis, Wash.; 26 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. Mr. Harrison was preceded in death by a son, David, Harrison; two grandsons, Kyle Harrison and Tommy Harrison; two brothers, Chester and Jim Farnsworth; and a sister Caroline Tompkins. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at North Gate City Church, 1209 Minor Road in Kelso. Pastors Scott Olin and Gary Peters will officiate.
