RAREY (I think she divorced and rem¹d)      5.  Alois Anton LEGAT b 7 Jun ? My Mother (Virginia ROBERTS)  did not get along with her m-in-l. My older sisters would tell that Maria would come over and beat my Mother, and pull her hair.  They lived on a small house on the same farm.  Maria thought that Mother's family  were going to hell because they were not Roman Catholic, though Mother had  converted when she married Dad.  At the death of Maria (she died after Simon) my father had a falling out with the Priest who did not want to repay  a loan that Maria had made to the Church.  The story as I remember was that Maria had loaned $6,000 to the school, and that a Nun came to my father and told him that the Priest had destroyed the note when Maria died, so that he would not have to pay it back. Father sued the Church, and was awarded a sum, of which $2,000 was kept by the Church for praying Maria out of pergatory.  My father was excommunicated and we were brought up to think Priests were thieves in black robes.  After he  remd, his 2nd wife got him to return to the R.C. church and he was  buried in R. C. cemetery behind St. Urban Church. None of his descendants are R.C.         My Mother loved f-in-l Simon.  It may be of interest to tell some of the stories that I heard as to why Simone came to the United States.   In the Austrian-Hungarian empire he faced a 7 year draft into the armed forces.  His wife's 1/2 brother was a Roman Catholic Priest, and he, and some other families, some of whom were relatives, came to the U.S. as the Pope was calling  for immigrants to "make America Catholic."      There was little chance for Simon to own land in Austria, but in America he could own land.  His family (as I heard) were keepers of the hunting preserve of the King/Kaiser.   They had to trim the trees so that the Kaiser  would not have his hat knocked off while riding to hunt.  If a peasant  trespassed on the land they would be shot.  Simon said that the Kaiser put  more value on the animals than on the people.  Simon had red hair and was rather short and stocky. He loved to sing.  My mother said that he would drink wine, or home made beer, and plow in his  long underwear while singing at the top of his voice.
