Lockley, Fred. "History of the Columbia River Valley, From The Dalles to the Sea." Vol. 3. S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1928. p. 236. A. C. KAUTZ who owns and operates a prosperous sash, door and cabinetwork factory at 894 Nicolai street, is numbered among Portland's progressive and successful business men, During the twenty-five years that he has operated this concern, the volume of his business has steadily increased and it is now one of the city's important manufacturing establishments. Mr. Kautz was born in Germany on the 31st of August, 1862, a son of Frederick and Louisa Kautz. The family came to the United States in 1870, locating in Chicago, where his father, who was in comfortable financial circumstances, retired. Both parents are now deceased. Mr. Kautz received his educational training in the public schools of Chicago and learned the trade of cabinetmaking, which work he followed until 1896, when he came to Oregon and took up a homestead in Tillamook county, which he still owns. In 1901 he came to Portland and was with the Oregon Water Power Company until 1903, when he embarked in business on his own account, making sash and doors and doing cabinetwork at East Sixth and Alder streets. This proved a successful venture and in 1915, having outgrown his first plant, he moved to his present location at Twenty-sixth and Nicolai streets, where he has one and a half acres of ground, on which he has a modern factory building, two hundred by two hundred and fifty feet. He does a general planing mill business, employs from forty to fifty men, and, being painstaking and thorough in everything he undertakes, has a well established reputation for the high quality of his work, In 1885 Mr. Kautz was united in marriage to Miss Anna V. Kramer, a Chicago schoolmate, and they are the parents of six children, as follows: Robert, who is engaged in ranching in Tillamook county; Anthony, who is associated with his father in the mill business; Franklin, who is farming in Polk county, Oregon; Eugene, who is engaged in the contracting business in this city; Walter, who is a cabinetmaker by trade; and Augusta, the wife of Norman Schmidt, of Portland. Mr. Kautz gives his political support to the republican party and during the years of his residence here has never been found wanting in his support of all measures advanced for the betterment of the city or the promotion of the public welfare. He is a Knight Templar Mason; a member of the Grotto, the Woodmen of the World, the German Aid Society, the Chamber of Commerce and the Portland Builders Exchange. Sound judgment, persistent effort and fair dealing have been the foundation stones of the substantial success which has come to him and his record has gained for him a high place in the confidence and respect of all who have had dealings with him. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
