Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 1220. ANDREW C. SMITH, M.D. Among the younger physicians of Portland who have rapidly risen into prominence, we find the name of Dr. Andrew C. Smith. He was born in Richland county, Wisconsin, July 14, 1856. His father, P. C. Smith, a native of Ireland, emigrated to America when a boy, and was among the early settlers of Wisconsin. He married Miss Elizabeth Tully, daughter of Prof. Edmund Tully, of Cavan, Ireland, who was principal of a celebrated classical school for priests. Mr. Smith followed farming in Wisconsin until 1864, when he came to Portland, Oregon. For several years he was connected with the river improvements as captain of the Commodore Perry. He subsequently removed to El Dorado county, California, where he is now engaged in farming. Andrew C. attended St. Michael's College, Portland, and completed his classical course at private schools in California. In December, 1874, he entered the Pacific Medical College, later called Cooper Medical College, and there graduated in November, 1877. Accepting an appointment as surgeon in the regular army, he was stationed at Camp McDermott, Nevada, during the Bannock Indian campaign, and with Major Meizner was in the field through the Umatilla country. He was the medical officer who accompanied the command of General Howard to Priest Rapids during the memorable council with Chief Moses and his warriors. After peace was declared, Dr. Smith was stationed at Front Point, San Francisco, until his discharge. In 1880 he opened an office in Amador City, California, and built up an extensive and lucrative practice, which eh continued until 1888. That year he went to New York city and took the post-graduate course at the New York Polyclinic. He then extended his trip to Europe and passed one year in the hospital in Vienna, and in visiting the hospitals of Berlin, Glasgow and London. Returning to the Pacific coast in September, 1890, he located at Portland, and in February, 1891, was appointed County Physician, which office he still holds. He is a member of the K. of P., Foresters, A.O.U.W., Portland Medical Society, and the State Medical Society of California. Dr. Smith follows a general practice in medicine and surgery, and with his advanced studies and experience, has rapidly acquired a large practice, which is constantly increasing. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
