Parsons, Col. William and Shiach, W. S. "An Illustrated History of Umatilla County and of Morrow County." Spokane, WA: W. H. Lever, 1902. p. 491. ABRAM MILLER Published to chronicle the events of Umatilla county, together with the meritorious deeds of those who have cleared the track for the incoming civilization, who redeemed this fertile region from the wild of nature, and beat back the blood thirsty savage, this volume would be sadly incomplete without a prominent portrayal of at least the leading features of the career of the worthy pioneer, substantial citizen, and upright and forceful man, whose name initiates this article. Cambridge, Henry county, Indiana, is the place of his birth, and April 30, 1838, the time. Here he resided until he was ten years of age, when he removed with his parents to Tippecanoe county in the same state. Six years he resided here with his parents, completing his education begun at his birthplace. When sixteen years of age he came to Libertyvillle, Iowa, in Jefferson county. At this place he took up farming with remunerative success and continued therein until 1862. On April 29 of that year he started with his young wife and babe, having been married on January 1, 1860, to Miss Nancy Moore, across the plains with ox teams to Oregon. He was in the John K. Kennedy train, and experienced considerable trouble with the Indians during their trip. Upon one occasion, while assisting the men of William Hunter's train to recapture stock stolen by the Indians, they lost four men and Hunters' train lost four men and one woman. He took up a government claim of land where a portion of the city of Pendleton now stands. This was in 1863, and the next year he sold his right to Mr. Goodwin. On February 17, 1891, after a life of faithfulness and devotion, his beloved wife passed over the river of death, leaving a bereaved husband and the following children to mourn her demise: Austie A., born September, 1860, in Iowa, now Mrs. J. W. Arrasmith, of Colfax,Washington ; Sadie O., born February 5, 1868, now Mrs. Benjamin, of Seattle: Hattie M., born May, 1872, now Mrs. Roy, of Pilot Rock; Ida, born August, 1876, now Mrs. Royer, of Pilot Rock; Effie E.. born April, 1882, now Mrs. Gault, of Pilot Rock ; James A. born November 10, 1886, now with his father. From the time that he first came to the country, Mr. Miller has been constantly employed in freighting and farming. His life of uprightness and stanch integrity has merited the respect and love of all, which he enjoys in generous measure. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
