Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 189. A. O. KAUFMANN One of the best known and most popular business establishments of Eugene is "Otto's Sweets," which bears-the distinction of being the oldest candy store in this city and has always commanded the leading trade of this locality. The founder and present proprietor of this store, A. 0. Kaufmann, was born in Switzerland in 1864 and secured his education in the public schools of that country, where also he learned the baking trade. In 1879 he came to the United States, locating first in New York city, where he signed a contract to work in a brickyard, but soon discovered that unknowingly he had agreed to draw no pay for six months. He also worked in Connecticut and while living in the east learned the art of making candy. In 1887 he went to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he worked in a candy shop, and .from there went to Denver, Colorado, where he remained for a short time. He next went to San Francisco, where he was employed for three years as head candy maker at Maskey's. From there he went to Sacramento, where he made candy for a large concern for eight months and then engaged in business for himself there, under the name of "Otto's Sweets." In 1902 Mr. Kaufmann came to Eugene and first opened a similar establishment under the same title, at a location across the street from where the Heilig theater now stands, there remaining for two years, when he came to his present location, at 705 Willamette street. He started as a retail candy dealer but for many years has manufactured all of his own candy, as well as ice cream, and the business has grown steadily until his is now regarded as one of the leading stores in its line in the valley. Of late, because of ill health, Mr. Kaufmann has not given his personal attention to the business, which is being carried on by his wife and their son, Otto L. Mr. Kaufmann is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. A man of sterling character, kindly and generous disposition and marked business ability, he has won a high place in the confidence and esteem of his fellowmen, who regard him as one of Eugene's most substantial and worthy citizens. While living in Denver, Colorado, Mr. Kaufmann was united in marriage to Miss Wilhelmina Lingelbach, who was born in Ohio, and they have two living children. Susie, who was born in San Francisco, California, is the wife of J. F. Gerot, owner of the Imperial restaurant in Eugene, and they are the parents of three children, Joe, Alice and Wilhelmina. The son, Otto L., born in Sacramento, California, received his education in the public schools of Sacramento and Eugene. after which he took a commercial course in the Eugene Business College. From that time to the present he has devoted himself closely to his father's business, at which he worked even during his later school days. Energetic and progressive, he is proving a man of good judgment, and the business is continuing to prosper under his direction. He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Woodmen of the World, and is deservedly popular throughout the circle of his acquaintance. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
