Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 1217. AARON ROSE the pioneer and founder of the beautiful town of Roseburg, was born in Ulster county, New York, in 1813. At the age of twenty-four years he emigrated with his parents to Michigan, where he farmed until 1851. In April, of that year, he crossed the plains from Coldwater, Michigan, to Oregon, arriving in September following. Here he took up a donation claim, on which the city of Roseburg now stands. For eighteen years he was engaged in farming, ran a butcher shop, bought and sold horses, and also conducted a store. During those years he hunted deer, paid $1 each for eggs and $1 a pound for flour. Mr. Rose has been a very successful business man, and the city which bears his name, owes much to his spirit of enterprise and progression. In 1855-'56 he was a member of the State Legislature; assisted in the building of the wagon road from Roseburg to Coos bay, and has given lands and money to every public cause. In all the lots he has sold and business transactions he has scrupulously guarded against a "boom," and the result is that the real estate here is on a solid basis. For many years he has given his entire attention to the building up of a prosperous city. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in April 2009 by Diana Smith.
