Gaston, Joseph. "The Centennial History of Oregon, 1811-1912." Vol. 2. Chicago, Clarke Publishing Co., 1912. p. 27. BIRD SPAULDING. The senior member of the well known livery firm of Spaulding & Vaughn is Bird Spaulding, who was born in Virginia on August 14, 1864. His parents, Wilson and Elizabeth Ann (McGruder) Spaulding, were natives of New York and Virginia respectively. In 1867 they removed to Warren county, Iowa, and there spent the remainder of their lives. Unto them were born six children, four of whom still survive. After receiving a common-school education Bird Spaulding left home at the age of seventeen years and learned the baker's trade in Des Moines, Iowa. He completed his apprenticeship in 1878 but worked at his trade only a short time. In 1880 he removed to Montana, where he shortly became manager for a livery firm and later became a prospector and miner, a business which he followed for twelve years. In 1899 he left Montana and came to Oregon, settling in Baker county, where he has since resided. Shortly after his arrival here he engaged in the livery business, becoming associated with Mr. Vaughn in the firm of Spaulding & Vaughn, now so well known. With Mr. Vaughn he is also interested in the ownership of two thousand acres of land. Politically Mr. Spaulding is a republican and although he has never been an office seeker or taken much interest in politics, he served for two years as deputy sheriff while a resident of Montana. He belongs to the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, being on of the local lodge's most efficient and popular members. Having been actively engaged in business in Baker City and Baker county since 1899, Mr. Spaulding has become well known to an unusually large number of people, and is popular in business, social and fraternal circles. His business ability is everywhere recognized and being possessed with that spirit which characterizes most pioneers, he abounds in good fellowship and geniality. He is one of Baker City's most respected business men and his dealings in business affairs have always been of the highest order as regards integrity and honesty. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
