Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 320. CORY ALLEN BARTELL Peculiar honor attaches to the man who, starting out in life alone and unaided, forges ahead and through the force of his own vitality and persistent efforts at length reaches a place of independence and honor among his fellowmen. Such has been the record of Cory A. Bartell, who is operating the Bartell and Central Hotels in Cottage Grove, and whose success has come to him without stain or dishonor. Mr. Bartell was born at Solomon, Kansas, on the 3d of March, 1880, and is a son of William and Fannie (Rasher) Bartell. His mother is deceased but his father still lives on the old homestead in Kansas. Cory A. Bartell had but a limited opportunity to attend school, not going beyond the fourth grade. When twelve years of age he started out to make his way in the world, going to Texas, where he found employment in a grocery store at fifteen dollars a month. By faithful and intelligent attention to duty he received several promotions and at length was sent out as a traveling salesman at one hundred dollars a month. In 1908 he came to Oregon as a traveling salesman, making his headquarters in Portland. In 1911 he leased the Oregon Hotel in Cottage Grove, and in 1920 also leased a new hotel built there by W. B. Cooper and which was named in his honor the Hotel Bartell. The latter has fifty-six rooms, with an annex containing twenty rooms, thirty-six of the rooms having private baths. There are forty rooms in the Central Hotel, and these two are the only hotels in Cottage Grove. Mr. Bartell has invested over thirty thousand dollars in this property, and the Bartell is regarded as one of the leading hotels in the Willamette Valley. He takes a justifiable pride in these houses, which he conducts in a manner that has gained him many friends among those who have patronized him. Mr. Bartell is vice president of the Oregon State Hotel Association, and is president of the Wolf Creek Game and Fur Farm, with one hundred and ninety acres under fence, of which fifteen acres are fenced off for muskrats. Here are raised deer, beaver, mink and fish, there being over one hundred deer in the herd, and the only beaver in captivity in the west are here found. Mr. Bartell has been active in restocking streams under the state game commission. In 1909 Mr. Bartell was united in marriage to Miss Mildred Ethel Crantz, who died December II, 1918. There were no children born to them, but they reared a girl, Donna May, aged fourteen years. Mr. Bartell was again married April 24, 1920, his second union being with Lottie May Rough, a native of Texas. Politically Mr. Bartell is a stanch republican, and he is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, in which he has attained the degrees of both the York and Scottish Rites, and is a Noble of the Mystic Shrine. He is past secretary and past vice president of the Chamber of Commerce and is president of the Cottage Grove Shrine Club. He also belongs to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Eugene Lodge, No. 357, Though most of his knowledge has been gained in the hard school of experience, Mr. Bartell has always been a close reader and keen observer and is. regarded as a well informed man. He has given his close attention to his business interests, but during his residence in Cottage Grove has found time and inclination to give of his personal efforts to the advancement of the town's best interests. He is a cordial and friendly man, has gained a wide acquaintance. and is regarded by his fellow citizens as one of the representative men of this locality, which he has honored by his activities and achievements. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
