Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 235. C. A. GEORGE Among the many highly improved farms which dot the landscape of Marion county is that of C. A. George, whose attractive place is located about a mile and a quarter north of Marion. Here he has devoted himself with intelligence and good judgment to agricultural pursuits and has attained a very satisfactory measure of success, being regarded as one of the best farmers in this locality. Mr. George was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on the 25th of August, 1863, and is a son of Abner and Almeda (Carey) George, the former born in Ohio in 1833 and the latter in Indiana in 1837. The father was a blacksmith by trade, who also farmed, and in 1865 he moved to Iowa, where he bought land, on which he lived until 1870, when he sold out and went to Kansas. He was a pioneer of Jewell county, and took up a homestead, to which he secured title and on which he lived until 1878. In that year he sold his farm and started for Oregon, traveling by railroad to Sacramento, California, thence by boat to San Francisco, where he took a steamer for Portland, Oregon. Buying a farm near Newberg, Yamhill county, he began its improvement and also worked at the trade of blacksmithing, living there until 1891, when he sold out and, coming to Marion county, bought ninety acres of land near Marion, on which he lived until his death, in 1904. To him and his wife were born four children, namely: Elva, deceased; Loretta, who died in infancy; C. A.; and Alvin, deceased. C. A. George was educated in the public schools of Kansas and accompanied his parents on their removal to Oregon in 1878. He assisted his father on the ranch in Yamhill county until his marriage, and in 1891 came to Marion county and leased his father's farm, whereon he now resides. He operated the farm for twelve years and on his father's death, in 1904, inherited half of it, leasing the other half from his brother, and this latter section he bought in 1908, being now the owner of ninety acres of as good land as can be found in this locality. He raises good crops of hay and grain, carrying on diversified farming, and also keeps cows, hogs and chickens. He keeps the farm well improved, exercises sound judgment in all of his operations and is enjoying well earned success. Mr. George has been married twice. In 1888 he wedded Miss Cordelia Hockett, and they became parents of three children, as follows: Mrs. Elda Eaton, who lives in Eugene, Oregon; Waiter, who is married and lives in Marion county; and Mrs. Goldie Jones, who also lives in this county. On May 29, 1926, Mr., George was married to Mrs. Josephine (Vick) Snyder, who was born in Nebraska and is a daughter of Charles and Sophia Vick, the former now deceased. Her parents were born in Mecklenburg, Germany, the father on October 21, 1848, and the mother, January 15, 1850. Mr. Vick came to this country with his parents in 1855 and the mother came in 1865. After their marriage they settled in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where Mr. Vick bought a farm, which he cultivated for several years, and then sold out and went to Illinois, where he lived about a year and a half. In 1876 he removed to Lincoln county, Nebraska, of which locality he was a pioneer, and there he engaged in farming until 1880, when he sold his property and returned to Wisconsin. Buying one hundred and twenty acres of land, he engaged in farming and ran a dairy of fifty cattle. In 1907 he sold his interests there and came to Oregon, locating at Falls City, Polk county, where he bought a small truck farm, on which he engaged in raising vegetables for several years. Later he retired and bought a place of two acres in Salem, there residing until his death, which occurred December 26, 1923. His widow still lives there. To this worthy couple were born six children: Charles, George, Josephine, Bernard, Alfred James, and Olive, who lives in Minnesota. The brothers are now engaged in business in Salem. By her first marriage, Mrs. George became the mother of four children, namely: Melvin E., born in Wisconsin, is married and has a daughter, Billie June; Carl L., born in Wisconsin, is married and has a daughter, Carrol Louise; B. Marshall, who was born in Duluth, Minnesota, is attending high school; and Jeanette Muriel, also born in Duluth, is in grammar school. Mr. George has shown a commendable interest in the progress of his community and was one of the organizers of the local telephone company, of which he is now a director. He has also rendered effective service as a member of the school board. He and his wife are members of the Friends church at Marion and give their earnest support to every worthy cause. Kindly and hospitable, they have many warm friends throughout this locality and are highly regarded by all who know them. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
