Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 217. CHARLES E. HARWOOD Charles E. Harwood, who now owns and operates a fine fruit farm near Eugene, was for many years engaged in teaching in this state and gained recognition as an able and successful educator, while in the realm of private citizenship he has so lived as to command the confidence and respect of his fellowmen. Born in Louisa county, Iowa, he is a son of I. B. and Harriet (Shaw) Harwood, the former a native of Indiana and the latter of Illinois. The father was a farmer and carpenter and was the scion of old New England stock, members of the family having fought in the war of the Revolution. The line is traced back further to an old English family, the family seat being at Great Harwood, in the west of England. The parents settled in Glenada, Oregon, in 1889, living there until 1905, when they came to the place where their son, Charles E., now lives, and where their deaths occurred. The farm comprised one hundred acres of good land, the property of Mr. Harwood's sister, Mrs. Anna B. Lowry, who had owned it since 1886, prior to which time it was a part of an old donation claim. Charles E. Harwood secured a good public school education in Iowa and graduated from the Shenandoah Normal School in that state. He taught one term of school in Iowa and in 1885 came to Eugene, Oregon, where he began teaching, following the profession for twelve years in this vicinity. He then went to the lake country, near Florence, Oregon, where he remained twenty-seven years, during a large part of which time he followed his profession, teaching in Florence until 1889. He also worked at the carpenter trade, and served six years as post-master at Glenada. For awhile he ran a shingle mill on the Siuslaw river and for about six years ran a store at Glenada. He remained in that locality until 1919, when he came to his present place, which comprises twenty-six acres. When his sister, Mrs. Lowry, died, she left her land to her brothers, and that part of the estate which is in prunes and other fruit Mr. Harwood handles for his brothers, the farm land being leased. Before coming here he had built a prune drier on the place, having a capacity of two tons of dried fruit a day, and he now operates it commercially. In 1892 Mr. Harwood was united in marriage to Miss Delona Sivery, who was born in Illinois, a daughter of Cyrus M. and Delona (Eastman) Sivery. The father died in this state in 1906, and the mother who was a native of Maine, died in Illinois, before the family came west. Mrs. Harwood's ancestors were of old Revolutionary stock. To Mr. and Mrs. Harwood have been born the following named; Dale S., who operates the Union Oil Company plant at Cottage Grove, Lane county, is married and has two children, Nedra and Dale, Jr.; Charles L. is serving as chief engineer on a government rum chaser; Delona L. is the wife of E. L. David, who is associated with Mr. Harwood, and they have two children, Eda Delona and Edwin. Mr. Harwood is a man of fine personal qualities, straight-forward in all of his relations and genial and friendly in manner, and is well deserving of the respect which is accorded him throughout the community. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
