Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 421. CHARLES WILKINS One of Pendleton's rising young men, was born in South Carolina, March 23, 1855, son of B. F. Wilkins, who was born near Cape Henry, Virginia, where he married Emily J. Bingham, also a native of Virginia. The father was a printer by profession and was at one time connected in newspaper business with John Swinton, a noted journalist of New York city. Mr. Wilkins removed to Washington, District of Columbia, in 1856, and there edited the Washington Sunday Herald, continuing in the same until his death, in 1873, when he was but forty-three years of age. His wife died the year previous, and they left three children, of which our subject was the oldest. Our subject attended the private schools at Washington City and finished his education at Brookville College, of Maryland, when he was seventeen years of age. He then commenced working at the printing business in Washington, and continued in the same occupation in different cities until 1884, when he came to Pendleton, Oregon, and engaged with the East Oregonian, on which he worked for five years. In 1890 he commenced a job office of his own, to which was added the publication of the Pendleton Tribune. This paper Mr. Wilkins has conducted as a Republican paper, and so ably has it been managed that our subject has had the pleasure of seeing it grow to be one of the leading papers of his town. He is a very able writer, and much time and space is devoted to the welfare of the town. No public improvements are started but his paper is the first to advocate and advance them. All social and Christian societies have been greatly aided by him, to the full extent of his means. Mr. Wilkins was married to Miss Mary Ullery, in 1886. Mrs. Wilkins is a native daughter or Oregon, her parents being among the early pioneers of the State. Mr. and Mrs. Wilkins have three children, namely: Raymond, Clarence and Beatrice. Our subject is a member of the A.O.U.W., and Woodmen of the World, and has filled different officers in both lodges, being now Overseer of the former and Adviser of the latter. He is also Secretary of the School Board of Pendleton, and in all positions he has been called upon to fill. Mr. Wilkins has proved himself a worthy citizen and good man. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in March 2006 by Diana Smith.
