Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 15. CLARENCE W. KEENE, M.D. Through concentrated effort Dr. Clarence W. Keene has steadily progressed in his chosen field of endeavor and the consensus of public opinion names him with the leading physicians and surgeons of Marion county, Silverton having been the scene of his professional activities for sixteen years. In both the paternal and maternal lines he is a representative of pioneer families of the state. He was born June 5, 1875, in Fairfield, Oregon. His father, David M. Keene, was a native of Tennessee and when a young man of twenty-five started for Oregon, making the long and hazardous journey across the plains, arriving in 1847, and in 1850 he settled on a donation claim near Fairfield. As the years passed he transformed the wild tract into a fertile farm and at the same time engaged in religious work as a missionary of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. He was a man of exemplary character and by example as well as precept pointed out to others the higher course in life. His wife, Elizabeth H. (Campbell) Keene, was a native of Missouri and a daughter of James Campbell, who came to Marion county, Oregon, in 1846. He secured a donation claim in the Waldo Hills district and later went to the territory of Washington, owning land on the present site of Seattle. His daughter Elizabeth passed away February 28, 1883, and her husband's demise occurred on the 28th of March, 1889. After the completion of his high school course Dr. Clarence W. Keene matriculated in the University of Oregon, from which he won the A. B. degree in 1896, and in 1901 was awarded the degree of M. D. by that institution. He was an interne in the County Hospital at Portland, Oregon, and began his professional career in Canyon City, this state. A year later he moved to Medford, Oregon, where he spent a similar period, and from 1903 until 1908 was engaged in postgraduate work. He took a course at Harvard University and attended hospital clinics of note, also studying in the medical centers of Europe. For two years Dr. Keene maintained an office in Portland, Oregon, specializing in orthopedic surgery, and served on the staff of the Multnomah County Hospital from the time it was opened until he left the Rose city. In 1911 he came to Silverton and in the intervening period his professional prestige has steadily increased. He is a member of tin' staff of Silverton Hospital and enjoys a large practice. In diagnosis he is thorough and painstaking and correctly applies his knowledge of medical science to the needs of his patients. Dr. Keene was married July 15, 1903, to Miss Minnie McClaine, a daughter of Fielding and Sophronia (Cavanagh) McClaine. For fifteen years she has been president of the Coolidge & McClaine Bank and under her able administration the institution has prospered. It was established at Silverton in 1880 by her father and is the second oldest bank in the county as well as one of the strongest and most reliable. Dr. and Mrs. Keene are the parents of three children, Elizabeth, Frances and Margaret. The Doctor is a Mason and has been master of Silverton Lodge, No. 45, F. & A. M. He is a charter member of the Country Club and his interest in the development and prosperity of his community is indicated by his affiliation with the Chamber of Commerce. He was formerly connected with the Portland Academy of Medicine and is now a member of the Marion County and Oregon State Medical Societies and the American Medical Association. Throughout life he has been a student, constantly striving to perfect himself in his profession, and his labors have been resultant and beneficial. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
