"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 371. Baker County. DANIEL H. SHAW Prominent among the leaders in the farming and stockraising industry in Baker county is the energetic and thrift gentleman whose name gives caption to this review, and it is with pleasure that we are able to accord him representation here as one of the builders of the political division with which our work is concerned, of which he is an honored pioneer. Born in Putnam county, Missouri, near the Iowa line, on April 10, 1845, he grew to early manhood there, receiving such educational advantages as were to be had in the local public schools. He in the spring of 1863, and his parents Theophalis and Elizabeth (Leachman) Shaw, in 1865, came over the trail of many moons to Oregon. The engine which pulled his train was an ox team, his coach a prairie schooner, time from Iowa to the coast four months and a half. Eventually they landed in Union county, where the first winter in the new state was spent. From the time of is advent until 1865, our subject busied himself in packing from Umatilla Landing to Silver City and other points in Oregon and Idaho. He then bought a pair of oxen with which he teamed in Silver City for a couple of years. In the fall of 1867 he moved with his parents onto a homestead of one hundred and sixty acres, situated six miles south of Baker City, and upon this he has ever since lived. He has added to his original holding from time to time, until he now has a fine farm of four hundred acres, all of which has been long since rendered mellow by the plow, and most of which is now producing its annual crop of hay. He raises each year about three hundred tons of excellent timothy hay, which is fed chiefly to cattle and horses on his own farm. He deeps a fine band of graded Shorthorn and Hereford cattle, such as would delight the eye of any connoisseur in such things. Mr. Shaw also owns some valuable property in Baker City. Fraternally our subject is affiliated with the A.O.U.W. In Baker City, on March 15, 1879, he married Miss Perlina F., daughter of Alfred G. and Eliza J. McKinney, old pioneers of the county, and to their union were born four children, Daniel A., Samuel T., Mamie B., and Pearl J. Mrs. Shaw passed to the great beyond on March 21, 1901, and her remains were laid to rest in the Baker City cemetery. Mr. Shaw's parents died in 1874. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in September 2005 by Diana Smith.
