"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 627. Malheur County. DANIEL R. EHRGOOD The subject of this article is one of the enterprising and capable farmers of Malheur county, and has labored long and faithfully here for the accumulation of the handsome property that he now possessed and for the advancement of the country wherein he has displaced great zeal and becoming sagacity and stability in his ways. Daniel R. was born in Berks county, Pennsylvania, on January 26, 1855, being the son of Abraham and Susan (Lebo) Ehrgood. He was reared on a farm and from the common schools he gained the education that fortified him for the labors and trials of life and when he had reaches the age of twenty-two he stepped forth from the parental roof to undertake for himself. He was the eighth of a family of nine children. His first move was to Wells county, Indiana, and from there he went to Parker county, Texas, where he followed farming until 1884. There also, on January 22, 1880, he was married to Miss Sarah J., daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Erwin, a native of Texas. In the spring of 1884 he took his family of wife and one child in wagons, and with mule teams he made the trip across the country to the Owyhee. He was four months on the journey and passed a very pleasant time, having plenty of game and fish enroute. The next fall he located his present home place, taking it under the pre-emption act. Settlers in the valley were few, and but one man resided where Nyssa now stands. Boise was the market at that time and the toil of taking a raw place with no ditches to bring water and make of it a fine farm is not inconsiderable. However, Mr. Ehrgood has succeeded admirable and has an excellent farm today. He has one hundred and four acres under the Owyhee ditch, well improved, having proper buildings and orchards and shade trees and so forth to make the rural home both valuable and attractive. Mr. Ehrgood is allied with the Democratic party and labors incessantly for the advancement of the country and its proper development, being also zealous for the betterment of the educational facilities. To this worthy couple there has been one child born, Susan E., wife of Cornelius Morehead of the vicinity of Nyssa. Mrs. Ehrgood's mother is now living in Parker county, Texas. It is of note that Mr. and Mrs. Ehrgood arrived here without a dollar of cash and they have labored wisely and faithfully until they have gained their comfortable home and are now among the leading citizens of this portion of the county. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
