Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 933. DAVID ZIMMERMAN of Clackamas county, is one of the leading tanners of the State of Oregon. He was born in Pennsylvania February 11, 1837, and is, of German ancestry. In 1856 he removed to the State of Missouri, and from there, in 1863, crossed the plains to Oregon, making the journey with ox teams, and coming in company with a train of eighty wagons. They were six months in making the journey, and upon their arrival here located in Clackamas county, where the colony with which he came had a large tract of land. When this colony disbanded he received as his share sixty acres of the land, to which he subsequently added fifty acres more. Soon after his arrival here Mr. Zimmerman engaged in the tanning business, which be has since successfully continued, and which he is now carrying on extensively. He manufactures large quantities of harness, skirting, collar and lace leather, his products finding a ready market in San Francisco and Portland. In 1862, the year previous to his coming to Oregon, Mr. Zimmerman married Miss Elizabeth Wolfer, who was born in the State of Indiana in 1837, being two months younger than her husband. One child was born to them in Missouri and five in Oregon, namely: Catherine, the oldest daughter, is the wife of J. D. Ritter; Triphena, who married Edward B. Miller, resides near her father; Rudolph William; Martha; Judith, wife of D. B. Gordon, also resides near by; and Beatrice, who died in her ninth year. The father and mother are still spared to each other, and are among the most worthy and highly respected people of their community. Rudolph W. Zimmerman, who is now running the large tannery business, is one of the enterprising and capable business men of the county in which he was born. He dates his birth here, May 27, 1866; July 21, 1891, he married Miss Anna C. Ziegler, who was born in Oregon, September 2, 1869. They have a little daughter, born September 15, 1892.
