An eminent member of the medical profession, a public-spirited citizen and a popular resident of his community, Dr. Emile C. Joseph is regarded as one of the representative men of Corvallis, where he has built up a large and lucrative practice. The Doctor was born in Streator, LaSalle county, Illinois, in 1890, and is a son of E. C. and Freda (Schaffer) Joseph, of whom the former was born in Strasburg, Alsace-Lorraine, and the latter in Heidelberg, Germany. They were married in Europe and in 1888 came to the United States, settling in Streator, Illinois. In the public schools of that city Emile C. Joseph secured his elementary education, and then went to Alberta, Canada, where he lived until 1902, when he came to Salem, Oregon, and attended high school. He received his pre-medical education at Willamette University and then matriculated in the medical department of the University of Oregon, in which he was graduated, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine, 1914. He served one year as interne in St. Vincent's Hospital. in Portland, and in 1915 located in Corvallis, where he has since been actively engaged in the practice of his profession, in which he has met with well-merited success, being regarded as one of the leading physicians of this part of the valley. Dr. Joseph is married and the father of four children, all of whom were born in Corvallis. He is a member of the Central Willamette Medical Society, of which he is president, the Oregon State Medical Society, the Pacific Northwest Medical Society and the American Medical Association. Fraternally, he is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Loyal Order of Moose, the United Order of Artisans, the Knights of the Maccabees, and the Phi Oil medical fraternity of the University of Oregon. He is examiner for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of New York, the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, the Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York and other leading companies. He is an active member of the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce and is a director of the Kiwanis Club. The Doctor is a veteran of the World war, having enlisted in the Medical Corps of the United States Army, in which he was commissioned a first lieutenant. He spent a month in training at the Army Medical School at Washington. D. C., and was then sent to Camp Gordon, at Atlanta, Georgia, where he served for ten months. He has shown helpful interest in the welfare of his community and has served for the past three years as a member of the city council.
