Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 166. E. L. WIEDER One of the prosperous business enterprises in Salem is that of the Salem Laundry Company, owned and operated by E. L. Wieder, a man of long and practical experience in that line of business, in which he is meeting with success. Mr. Wieder was born in Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, on the 28th of October, 1860, and is a son of David M. and Lydia Wieder. In 1861 the family moved to Illinois, locating at Paris, where the father engaged in the merchant tailoring-business. In that city E. L. Wieder was reared and attended the public schools, after which he learned the trade of a tailor. In 1889 he established a laundry in Paris, which proved a successful venture, and he built up a large business, conducting the enterprise until 1912, when he sold out and, coming to Albany, Oregon, bought the old Albany Laundry, and subsequently the Magnolia Laundry, consolidating the two concerns. In this business he was associated with his brother, C. H. Wieder, and in 1918 he bought the Capital City Laundry in Salem, which he sold in January. 1925. In 1922 the brothers bought the Salem Laundry, which had been established in 1897 by Colonel C. J. Olmsted, and carried on the business together until 1925, when E. L. Wieder bought his brother's interest and has since been alone. C. H. Wieder is now operating the Albany Laundry. The present building, which was completed by Mr. Wieder on April 27, 1925, is of reinforced concrete, one hundred and sixty-four by seventy-five feet, part of the building being two stories high. He employs forty-five people and runs five delivery wagons. The plant is equipped with modern machinery and Mr. Wieder takes a justifiable pride in the quality of the work which he turns out, through which he has built up a large and steadily increasing business. In 1887 Mr. Wieder was united in marriage to Miss Mary Van Seller, of Illinois, now deceased. To this union were born three children, namely: Louise, who is a graduate of the Los Angeles Library School and is now serving as city librarian at Baker, Oregon; Van, who is associated with his father in business, and is married and has two children; and Edwin, who also is connected with his father's business. Mr. Wieder is an ardent republican in his political views and while living in Illinois took an active interest in public affairs, holding several local offices. He is a Mason and a past commander of Albany Commandery, No. 5, K. T., being also at this time junior warden of the grand commandery of Knights Templar of the state of Oregon. He likewise belongs to the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Chamber of Commerce and the Illihee Country Club. He is deservedly popular among his associates and throughout the community is held in high regard for his business qualities and the substantial success which he commands. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
