Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 297. F. G. MYERS Among the well managed institutions of which Salem is justly proud, none is better known than The Spa, which for twenty-eight years has been under the efficient direction of F. G. Myers, an experienced restaurateur. He was born in 1879 and is a native of Oil City, Pennsylvania. About 1889 his parents, David S. and Clara (Weaver) Myers, came to Salem, Oregon, and his father operated a sawmill. He is survived by the mother, who still makes her home in the Capital city. F. G. Myers received his early education in the east, continued his studies in the public schools of Salem and was graduated from the Capital City Business College. He afterward became a clerk, working in various stores, and when nineteen years of age became identified with the business which he now conducts. The Spa was established in 1894 by W. T. Stolz and was named for the city of Spa in Belgium, a resort famous throughout the world. The name signifies a watering place or fountain and a place of refreshment. In 1898 Mr. Stolz admitted Mr. Myers to a partnership and since 1915 the latter has been sole owner of the business, which for thirty-four years has been in continuous operation at No. 382 State street. The new annex was completed in May, 1926, and the establishment now has a seating capacity of two hundred. It is provided with twenty private booths and the Green Gate tea room will accommodate forty-five persons. The decorations and appointments are harmonious and beautiful and the service is faultless. Mr. Myers has installed an automatic storage plant and constantly strives to meet all requirements of the state health laws of cleanliness and sanitation. The pastries are all home made. and pure Jersey cream is used in manufacturing the ice cream. The milk also stands the highest test and the food is appetizing and wholesome. Mr. Myers also makes fine candies and has twenty-eight well trained employes who enable him to maintain the quick service in which he specializes. He combines a capacity for detail with executive force and has made The Spa a place of courtesy, of unobtrusive attention reflecting an air of hominess and welcome a place which has brought additional prestige to the city. Mr. Myers was married August 7, 1897, to Miss May Prieste of Mapleton, Iowa, and they have become the parents of two children: Beryl, who is attending the University of Oregon; and Maxine, a high school pupil. Mr. Myers belongs to the Cherrians, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Chamber of Commerce. He is also a Rotarian and a member of the Illihee Country Club. He gives his political allegiance to the republican party and is always found in the van of movements for Salem's advancement. His business plays an important part in the city's economic life and welfare and his pronounced success proves that he has chosen the line of work which affords the best medium for the expression of his talents. By nature he is genial, companionable and kind-hearted and draws his friends from all walks of life. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in June 2016 by Diana Smith.
