Dr. Ferdinand Dammasch, honored because if his high attainments in the healing art, as well as for his sterling qualities of character, was born in San Francisco, California, in 1879, and is a son of Louis and Sarah Josephine (Hartman) Dammasch, who were married in San Francisco in 1879. His father first came to Portland with the Jennie Winton Opera Company in 1878 and was the first leading tenor ever to appear in this city. In 1883 he established his permanent residence in Portland and here spent his remaining years. He was a member of Portland Lodge, B. P. 0. E., holding card No. 1. He is survived by his widow, who still resides in this city. Ferdinand H. Dammasch attended the public schools of Portland, graduating from high school, and then went to Philadelphia, where he studied dentistry. Later he decided to devote his life to the medical profession, to which end he entered the medical school of Temple University, in Philadelphia, from which he received the M. D. degree. He served as interne in the Samaritan Hospital in that city and also took a postgraduate course in New York city. For the past twenty-three years he has been engaged in the general practice of medicine in Portland and is a member of the medical staff of St. Vincent's Hospital, while during the administration of Mayor Joseph Simon he served as chief deputy health officer. In 1914 he was chiefly responsible for the establishing of a public morgue in Portland. In 191G Dr. Dammasch was elected coroner of Multnomah county, serving until 1917, when he resigned in order to enlist in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. He was promoted to the rank of major, and now holds a commission as lieutenant-colonel in the United States Medical Reserves. In 1904, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Dammasch was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Cascaders and they now have three children; Louis, twenty-two years of age, a senior in the University of Oregon; Josephine, twenty years of age, a freshman in the University of Oregon, and Eleanor, sixteen years of age, a sophomore in the Washington high school. Dr. Dammasch is a member of the various branches of the Masonic order, the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, the Improved Order of Red Men, the Woodmen of the World, the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion. He maintains professional affiliation with the Multnomah County Medical Society, the Oregon State Medical Society and the American Medical Association, belongs to the Portland Turnverein and is a life member of the Multnomah Club. In his political views he is a republican and evinces an interest in all matters relating in any way to the public welfare. He is a director of the American Exchange Bank. Widely acquainted throughout Multnomah county, all who know him hold him in high esteem for his ability, character and excellent personal traits. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
