Hathaway is a prominent automobile dealer of Eugene, who for many years has been the local agent for the Dodge line of cars and has been uniformly successful in his business affairs. A native of Oregon, Mr. Hathaway was born in Portland on the 8th of January, 1883, and is a son of William and Lillie (Merrick) Hathaway, both of whom were natives of Illinois. They went to Portland, Oregon, in the spring of 1881 and the father was for many years in the employ of the Oregon Western Railway & Navigation Company. He has passed away and his widow now resides in Eugene. Farris M. Hathaway attended the public schools of his native city and for several years was engaged in the grocery trade. In 1911 he became identified with the automobile business in Portland as a salesman for the Ford agency. Two years later he acquired the Ford agency at Prineville, Crook county, where he remained about a year, and later came to Eugene, where he took over the Ford agency, which he held for three and a half years. In 1915 he also established a local agency for the Dodge Brothers cars, being the first Dodge dealer in Eugene. In 1916 he sold the Ford agency and has handled the Dodge continuously since, being the sole agent here for that well-known car. He has been very successful and in 1919 erected an excellent building at 174 Eighth street East, sixty-tour by one hundred and sixteen feet, well arranged and fully equipped in every respect, He maintains a repair shop and parts service and efficiency and promptness have characterized his handling of the trade. He employs twelve people and since taking over the Dodge agency has sold twelve hundred and fifty cars in Lane county. On May 2, 1919, Mr. Hathaway was united in marriage to Miss Blanche A. Booth, who is a native of Minnesota. He is a member of Eugene Lodge.No. 11, A. F. & A. M., and was chairman of the building committee which had in charge the erection of the Masonic temple. He also belongs to the Lions Club, the Eugene Country Club and the Chamber of Commerce. The republican party commands his political support and he can always be counted on to cooperate in all movements for the advancement of the material, civic or moral interests of his community. He is a man of marked business ability and sound judgment in all practical affairs, while in his social relations he has always commanded the respect and good will of his fellowmen. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
