McAlister, vice president of the United States National Bank of Eugene, has long teen prominent in the financial circles of this city and is regarded as an able and influential man. being an important factor in the success which this well known institution enjoys. Its history goes back to 1887, when the Hank of Oregon was organized by J. B. Harris, F. W. Osbourn, F. B. Dunn. C. M. Horn, K. M. Day. M. Wallace, George B. Dorris, S. M. Yoran, P. W. Harris, J. C. Church. J. M. .Sloan. I. K. Davis, S. H. Spencer, B. D. Paine and J. M. Hodson. The first officers were J. B. Harris, president; S. M. Yoran, vice president; and F. W. Osbourn, secretary. In 1889 these same gentlemen nationalized the Bank of Oregon, the name of which was changed to the Eugene National Bank, of which J. B. Harris became the president and W. T. Peet the cashier. In 1892 this institution was discontinued and the Eugene Loan & Savings Bank was established with the following officers: Charles Lauer, president; S. M. Yoran, vice president: and F. W. Osbourn, cashier. This bank still continues to handle the savings and trust business of the United States National Bank. In 1907 the Merchants Bank was established with a capital stock of sixty-five thousand dollars and with S. S. Spencer as president: L. H. Potter, vice president : and F. N. McAlister, cashier. The bank was then located at the corner of Seventh and Willamette streets. In 1913 the Merchants Bank was nationalized as the United States National Bank, with a capital of one hundred thousand dollars. In 1909 L. H. Potter was elected president of the institution, serving until 1915, when he was succeeded by W. W. Calkins, who is still holding that position. In June, 1915, the bank purchased and moved into the building at the corner of Eighth and Willamette streets. The combined statement of the United States National Bank and the Eugene Loan & Savings Bank on June 30, 1926, showed a capital stock of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, surplus and profits of one hundred and twenty-nine thousand, ninety-eight dollars and forty-two cents and deposits amounting to two million, five hundred and fifty-one thousand, two hundred and ninety-two dollars and seventy-six cents. The directors are W. W. Calkins, F. N. McAlister, David Auld, Powell Plant, L. O. Beckwith, C. S. Frank and Addie B. Osburn, while the officers at the present time are as follows: W. W. Calkins, president: F. N. McAlister, vice president; David Auld, vice president; and Powell Plant, cashier. F. N. McAlister is a native son of Oregon, having been born in Linn county on the 30th of December, 1874. His parents were E. A. and Samantha A. (Cornell) McAlister, the former a native of Maine. They were married after coming to this state, of which they were pioneers. Here the father engaged in the practice of medicine for many years, or until his death, in April, 1927. The mother is also deceased. F. A. McAlister attended the public schools and Albany College, after which he spent three years as a student in the University of Oregon. Thereafter he entered the First National Bank of Eugene, with which he remained for eight years, on the expiration of which period he became one of the organizers of the Merchants Bank, of which he served as cashier for two years, being then promoted to the vice presidency. He has devoted himself closely to the interests of this institution and is recognized as a keen and sagacious business man. On October 21, 1902, Mr. McAlister was united in marriage to Miss Fannie Young, a daughter of C. W. Young, who was a pioneer of Eugene, locating here in 1854. Mr. and Mrs. McAlister are the parents of a daughter, Mildred, who is a graduate of the University of Oregon. Fraternally Mr. McAlister is affiliated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Woodmen of the World and he also belongs to the Kiwanis Club and to the Eugene Country Club. He has taken an active interest in affairs looking to the prosperity of Eugene and became a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, of which he was the first secretary, serving in that capacity for one year. He is a director and vice president of the Security Savings & Loan Association, is secretary of the Eugene Hotel Company and was one of the organizers and is now president of the Eugene Clearing House. Politically he has always been aligned with the republican party and has been deeply interested in local public affairs, having served for seven years as a member of the city council. In every relation of life he has shown himself a man of integrity in thought and action and easily stands in the front rank of the representative men of his community. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
