Lockley, Fred. "History of the Columbia River Valley, From The Dalles to the Sea." Vol. 3. S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1928. p. 432. GUSTAVE E. BRUERE, M. D., F. A. C. S. Studiousness, combined with the habit of thoroughness, has brought Dr. Gustave E. Bruere to the fore in his profession and for more than three decades he has been an outstanding figure in medical circles of Portland. He was born in 1869, in St. Charles, Missouri, and it was there that his parents, Dr. John E. and Cornelia (Schoeneich) Bruere, were married. His father was a surgeon of prominence and served in the Civil war, holding the rank of major. He had a family of nine children, four sons and five daughters. In the public schools of his native town Dr. Gustave E. Bruere received his early training and next matriculated in Washington University at St. Louis, Missouri. He was graduated from the St. Louis Medical College, the medical department of Washington University, and for five years thereafter was associated with Dr. John Green, of St. Louis. Later Dr. Bruere studied in New York and in Berlin and Kiel, Germany, and in Holland under Dr. Herman Snellen of Utrecht. Dr. Bruere's scientific knowledge was further broadened by study under Dr. Brandegee of New York city and postgraduate work in the New York Eye and Ear School. He began his professional career in association with his father and brother in general medicine. After preparation for special work he started for Los Angeles, California, stopping in Portland to do some work for a local physician, and liked the city so well that he decided to remain here. Since 1896 he has practiced continuously in Portland and is regarded as one of its foremost specialists in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat. His offices are located in the Journal building and his patients are drawn from a wide area. Time has enhanced his skill and his ministrations have been attended by gratifying results. In 1897 Dr. Bruere married Miss Daisy Elizabeth Corpeny, a native of Neosho, Missouri, and they have become the parents of four children: Elizabeth Cornelia, the wife of Dr. Harry Goldstein, of Spokane, Washington; Mrs. Charles Newell Huggins, who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, and is the mother of a son; Alice, a young woman of twenty-two, who is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College of Pennsylvania and who will reside in New York city while engaged in research work for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company; and Jean, a young girl of sixteen and a student in Bryn Mawr College. Dr. Bruere has contributed liberally of his time and means toward the Widows and Orphans Fund of Portland and his deep interest in the city's advancement is indicated by his affiliation with the Chamber of Commerce. Along fraternal lines he is identified with the Masonic order and his interest in sport is shown by his connection with the Multnomah Athletic Association. He is a member of the Portland City, Multnomah County and Oregon State Medical Societies, the American Medical Association, the Pacific Coast Association of Ophthalmologists and Oto-Laryngologists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Oto-Laryngology, and has been honored with a fellowship in the American College of Surgeons. His scientific knowledge and pronounced ability have placed him with the distinguished representatives of his profession and his career has been conspicuously useful. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
