Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 98. GEORGE I. BARR One of the most popular and highly esteemed citizens of Silverton, Marion county, is George I. Barr, who is now serving his second term as mayor of the city, in which position he has rendered splendid service to the community. He was born in Michigan, in 1872, and is a son of I. C. and Charlotte (Fusee) Barr, the latter now living in Wisconsin. The father, who died in 1893, was a blacksmith by trade, and in 1881 took his family to Wisconsin, where he followed that business to the time of his death, which occurred there. To him and his wife were born four children, namely : Anthony, who lives in Wisconsin; George I., of this sketch; William Eldry, who lives in Montana; and Mrs. Jessie McCarty, who lives in Wisconsin. George I. Barr secured a good education in the public schools of Wisconsin and then learned the blacksmith trade under his father, as did his brothers. When twenty-four years of age he went into that business on his own account, being so engaged there until 1903, when he came to Oregon, locating at Lacombe, where he remained until 1907, when he came to Silverton. During the twenty years that he has lived here he has conducted a well-equipped blacksmith shop and has commanded a large patronage, the high quality of his work being his best advertisement, for he is regarded as an expert in his line. In 1923 Mr. Barr established a farm implement business, for which purpose he erected a substantial building, fifty-two by sixty feet, and carries a large stock of International Harvester Company machinery and implements, in the handling of which he has built up a profitable business. In 1900 in Wisconsin, Mr. Barr was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Hannah, a daughter of C. J. and Mary Hannah, the former now deceased, while the mother still lives in Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. Barr have six children, namely : Robert, who is twenty-three years of age; Evelyn, aged thirteen; Sylvia, aged twelve years ; and three who died in infancy. Mr. Barr has shown a commendable interest in the affairs of his city and served twelve years as a member of the city council. His splendid service in that capacity received distinctive recognition in his subsequent election to the office of mayor, to which he was reelected for a second term. He is a Mason, and has passed through the chairs of his lodge. He belongs to the Modern Woodmen of America and to the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Barr is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Royal Neighbors. Mr. Barr possesses a strong personality, is candid and straightforward in all of his relations and is recognized as one of Silverton's most substantial and influential citizens. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
