Steelhammer also ably controls the activities of the Silverton Chamber of Commerce and has stimulated the pulse of trade in this locality. He was born in 1889 at Walcott, North Dakota, and is a son of A. G. and Christina (Anderson) Steelhammer. His great-grandfather in the paternal line served under Napoleon Bonaparte and rose to the rank of captain. A. G. Steelhammer was born in Sweden and in 1867 sailed for the United States. He sought the opportunities of the west and in 1890 journeyed to Kelso, Washington. In the following year he came to Oregon and opened a blacksmith shop in Silverton. He established a large patronage and afterward engaged in fanning. He is the owner of a valuable ranch situated a mile from Silverton and acts as chairman of the republican central committee of Marion county, in which he has a wide acquaintance and many sincere friends. Although eighty-one years of age, he is vigorous and alert. His wife has reached the seventy-ninth milestone on life's journey. George W. Steelhammer received a public school education and also attended a business college. In September, 1907, he became a clerk in a drug store at Silver-ton and in 1910 purchased the business, which he has since conducted under his own name. He features the prescription department and his establishment ranks with the largest of the kind in the county. He keeps in close touch with all new developments in the trade and his well known reliability has brought him an extensive patronage. In 1910 Mr. Steelhammer married Miss Letty May Carson, a native of Central Point, Oregon, and they have one child, George W. Jr., aged three years. Mr. Steelhammer has taken the thirty-second degree in Masonry and is a past master of Silverton Lodge, No. 45, F. & A. M. He is a Noble of the Mystic Shrine and belongs to the lodge and encampment of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He is also connected with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and his political views are in accord with the tenets of the republican party. He has been councilman and as president of the Chamber of Commerce is rendering service of value to Silverton. Mr. Steelhammer is a member of the hospital board and manifests a deep and helpful interest in all projects for civic growth and betterment. He owes his prosperity- to concentrated effort and good management and is a young man of high principles and substantial worth. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
