"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 314. Baker County. HARRY A. DUFFY It is with pleasure that we are allowed the privilege of making mention in this volume of the prominent young business man and distinguished citizen whose name initiates this article and whose life has largely been spent in the county of Baker and with that uprightness and manifestation of ability and integrity that have won the esteem and confidence of all and where he has already carved for himself a place of enviable distinction both in the social and business world, being at the present time manager and part owner of the second oldest drug business in the county, the Duffy drug store. The birth of Mr. Duffy took place in Macon, Macon county, Missouri, on February 29, 1876, being the son of Joseph M. and Ella M. (Smith) Duffy, especial mention of the father being made in another part of this work. When eight years of age the parents removed to Owyhee valley in this state, and two years later they repaired to this county, settling first in Huntington. Here our subject attended the graded schools, and graduated therefrom in 1897. The training acquired in this way was by no means all that he gained, for much of his time was spent in practical service in the drug business, and when he finished his schooling he was ready to go before the state board of pharmacy, and there he passed with honor the trying examinations to be undergone by those who would become registered pharmacists. He gained this distinction readily and at once entered business for himself and is at the present time enjoying a large and lucrative patronage, being well and favorably known throughout all the section adjacent to his home town, as well as through the county at large. Fraternally Mr. Duffy is affiliated with the Burnt River Lodge, No. 86, I.O.O.F., also with the A.F. & A.M., Baker City Lodge, No. 47. He is a member of the Congregational church and is active in its support and in general church work. He has served as mayor of the city and is at the present time city councilman, and in all of this public work he has manifested the same sagacity and keen foresight that is characteristic of him in his private business enterprises. In political matters he is active and interested, and allies himself with the Republican party. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in September 2005 by Diana Smith.
