"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 500. Grant County. HIEL A. HYDE As one of the veterans of the Civil war, the subject of this sketch is deserving of especial mention in addition to the fact that he is one of the substantial and worthy citizens of this county. When the call came for help to defend the flag, young Hyde was ready to go to the front and there he did valiant service until his physical system succumbed to the trying ordeal and he sickened and then was honorably discharged to return to the more quiet walks of private life. Mr. Hyde was born in Franklin county, New York, in 1841, being the son of Alfred and Margaret (Rodgers) Hide. He was with his parents on the farm until 1871 when they came to Oregon and settled where he lives at the present time, seven miles east from Prairie City. They took a homestead and commenced to raise garden vegetables and some grain, and in 1889 his father died, his mother dying two years previous to that time. He does a good market gardening business and raises stock. In 1861, he enlisted in Company E, Ninety-Eighth New York Volunteer Infantry where he did fine service for nine months and then was discharged on account of disability. In 1887, the marriage of Mr. Hyde and Miss Sarah, daughter of J. G. Barkley, was solemnized and they have become the parents of the following children, Lida M., Josephine L., Mary J., Joseph E., William A., Hiel A., Buel J. Mr. Hyde is affiliated with the I.O.O.F., Prairie City Lodge, No. 33. He is also very prominent among the temperance workers of the county and has done efficient service in that cause, both by bright personal example and careful precept, at opportune times and fitting occasions. He has been a leading spirit in the Good Templar movement for some years and he was instrumental in organizing a blue ribbon club in April, 1901, and at the present time, November, 1901, its membership has increased to over one hundred. Mr. Hyde is highly respected and his life of uprightness is a living example for all. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in October 2005 by Diana Smith.
