He received his academic learning in the same college where Hendricks and English graduated. He moved to Iowa in 1850; thence to Missouri the same year. In April, 1852, he crossed the plains to Oregon, and settled in Linn county on September twenty-fourth of that year. In the spring of 1853 he went to the gold mines of Northern California and Southern Oregon, where he remained until the summer, then returned to Salem. The fall of 1853 found him in Lane county, where he took a donation claim about eleven miles west from Eugene City, in Spencer precinct and where he has since continuously lived. In the spring of 1854 he taught the first school in Siuslaw precinct. He joined Captain Buoy's company in 1855, doing service in the Rogue river war, and in the spring of 1856 enlisted for the same service in David W. Keith's company, and was orderly sergeant.
