Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 332. HERBERT EAKIN One of the important financial institutions of Lane county is the First National Bank of Cottage Grove, of which Herbert Eakin has been president for many years. Intimately identified with the growth and development of this city, in both mercantile and financial affairs, he has been an important factor in its prosperity, while at the same time a gratifying- measure of material success has come to him. Mr. Eakin is a native of Illinois, born in 1859, and is a son of S. B. and Catherine Eakin. His father was a fanner and in 1866 brought his family to Lane county, Oregon, buying a tract of land three miles west of Eugene, where he successfully engaged in farming for many years, but in later life retired and moved to Eugene, where he and his wife died. Herbert Eakin secured his early education in the public schools and attended the University of Oregon. He followed farming for some years and also clerked in stores for awhile. Coming to Cottage Grove, he formed a partnership with Darwin Bristow and engaged in merchandising, in which they prospered. Some years later they sold that business and in 1890 organized the First National Bank of Cottage Grove, of which Mr. Eakin has long served as president. This well known institution has enjoyed a steady growth through the years and is regarded as one of the solid and substantial banks of Lane county. Mr. Eakin is a careful and conservative man in his business affairs and his record as the head of this bank has earned him a high reputation among the able bankers of the valley. In 1889 Mr. Eakin was united in marriage to Miss Olivia Wynne, of Cottage Grove, daughter of Dr. A. L. Wynne, one of the pioneer physicians of this section of the county. Mr. Eakin is a stanch republican in his political views and has taken a deep interest in public affairs, though he has never sought official preferment, his only public office being that of city treasurer, which position he now holds. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and is deservedly popular throughout the community. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in March 2012 by Diana Smith.
