Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 32. H. H. COREY For sixteen years, H. H. Corey has been identified with the public service commission of Oregon and for eleven years has been a member of that body, discharging his official duties in a manner that has won for him general commendation and praise. Mr. Corey was born at Burlington, Wisconsin, on the 1st of June, 1874, and is a son of H. H. and Hattie E. (Smith) Corey, the former a millwright by trade. The family removed to Baker, Oregon, in 1886, and here the parents spent their remaining years, both being now deceased. The son received his education in the public schools of Baker and entered the law school of Willamette University. He enlisted in the United States Army for service in the Spanish-American war and on his return to civil life taught school and was otherwise employed, working in stores and sawmills, and also engaged in ranching. In 1905 he was elected to the city council of Baker and later served as deputy county clerk and recorder. Later Mr. Corey came to Salem as auditing clerk and chief deputy secretary of state, which position he filled until October, 1911, when he was appointed the second secretary of the public service commission, in which capacity he became thoroughly familiar with the work of that body. In 1916 he was elected a member of the commission and, by successive reelections. has been retained on the board to the present time. The public service commission is one of the most important departments of the state government and Mr. Corey has won high praise for the able and impartial manner in which he has discharged his duties, having at one time served as chairman of the commission. In 1901 Mr. Corey was united in marriage to Miss Lula H. Moeller, of Baker, and they are the parents of six children, namely : Helen Ruth, Robert H., Karl, Margaret Maxine, Katheryn Elizabeth and Dorothy Elaine. Mr. Corey gives his political support to the republican party and is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He has attained distinction in a field of effort where sound erudition, mature judgment and strict integrity are demanded, stands consistently for the highest standard of efficiency in government, and his marked ability and sterling qualities have won for him a desirable place in the confidence and respect of his fellow citizens. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
