HORACE J. MATLOCK

     It is with pleasure that we place in this volume of the chronicles of
Morrow county an epitome of the life of the prominent young business man whose
name initiates this paragraph.  Being a native of the county and a product of
its institutions, it is with peculiar pleasure that we note his excellent
success and call attention to the abilities and unswerving integrity that are
possessed by him and manifested in his commendable career.
     The birth of Mr. Matlock was on December 15, 1876, on his father's farm, of
whom specific mention is made elsewhere in this volume.  His parents were Thomas
J. and Mary E. Matlock, early and worth pioneers of this section.  Our subject
grew to manhood in this county, receiving in the schools of Heppner the
educational training of which he is possessed.  In 1900 he started in the
grocery business in partnership with J. M. Hart, buying the stock of Thompson &
Thomas.  They carry a stock of three thousand dollars worth of goods and enjoy
their strict business methods and careful attention to the wants of their
customers.
     The marriage of Mr. Matlock and Miss Jennie W. Wood, a native of Canyon
City, was solemnized on January 18, 1898, and to them have been born one child,
Horace W., born September 26, 1899.  Mrs. Matlock is a member of the
Episcopalean church, and quite active in its affairs.
