Portland, OR, Geo. H. Himes, Book and Job Printer, 1885. p. 647. HIRAM SMITH Born in Dunnville, New York, and grew to manhood there; removed to Ohio, and in 1845 organized an expedition for Oregon. Subsequently he crossed the plains six times. In 1862 he went out upon the plains to protect and guide the immigrants of that year. He resided mainly in Portland and accumulated a fortune. Was very widely known, and was a man of great usefulness and strength of character. Old pioneers will remember him best by his nickname of "Red Shirt Smith."
